Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is an IFSC Code in Indian Banking?
IFSC (Indian Financial System Code) is an 11-character alphanumeric code assigned by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to uniquely identify every bank branch participating in NEFT, RTGS, and IMPS electronic money transfers.
What is the structure of an 11-character IFSC Code?
Structure: First 4 characters represent the Bank Name (e.g. SBIN for SBI), 5th character is always 0 (reserved for future use), and the last 6 characters represent the specific Branch Code.
What is the difference between IFSC Code and MICR Code?
IFSC (11 alphanumeric characters) is used for online electronic fund transfers (NEFT, RTGS, IMPS). MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition - 9 numeric digits) is printed at the bottom of cheque leaves for automated cheque clearing.
Where can you find your bank branch IFSC Code?
You can find your IFSC code on: (1) Your bank cheque book leaf, (2) The first page of your bank passbook, (3) Net banking/mobile banking app, and (4) Toolyn’s Instant IFSC Finder.
What happens if you enter the wrong IFSC code during a transfer?
If the IFSC code and account number mismatch between two different banks, the transaction fails and funds are automatically refunded to the sender within 2 to 24 hours under RBI guidelines.
Is IFSC code required for UPI fund transfers?
No. UPI transfers use Virtual Payment Addresses (UPI IDs) or mobile numbers routed through NPCI without requiring manual IFSC entry. However, IFSC is mandatory for bank account-to-account NEFT/RTGS transfers.
Do merged banks (e.g. Allahabad Bank into Indian Bank) have new IFSC codes?
Yes. Following major public sector bank mergers, all legacy IFSC codes were revoked and replaced with new standardized IFSC codes issued by the anchor banks.
What is the 9-digit MICR code breakdown?
The 9-digit MICR code consists of: First 3 digits = City Code (matches pin code), Middle 3 digits = Bank Code, and Last 3 digits = Branch Code.
